Exercise programs that are individualised to you and your curve, are proven to assist in the management of scoliosis and kyphosis.
At QLD Scoliosis Clinic, we recognize that scoliosis treatment is not a one-size-fits-all solution.By leveraging the Schroth Method alongside other targeted treatments, we aim to address the unique needs of each individual, offering hope and improved quality of life to those affected by scoliosis. Our approach is highly individualized, focusing on specialized scoliosis exercises, postural education, targeted manual therapy, and practical lifestyle adjustments.
These interventions are crucial not only for managing the condition effectively but also for improving function, managing pain and improving posture. For many, this comprehensive strategy significantly enhances their quality of life, allowing them to live more comfortably with scoliosis.
Back pain management
Scoliosis Specific Exercise Programs
Specialised physiotherapy and exercise can assist in those with back pain relating to scoliosis or similar postural condition. Our team are trained specifically in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of back pain, especially those relating to postural conditions like Scoliosis having trained at the Scoliosis Physical Therapy School. Our therapists use gentle hands-on techniques including massage, joint mobilisation and dry needling for symptom relief and management, as well as exercises individualised to your symptoms and your postural spinal condition for long term solutions to your pain. Our physiotherapists treat all musculoskeletal pains, in particular spinal pain that could be related to your postural conditions, and those not responding to traditional therapies. Our team see those with both acute and chronic symptoms and functional concerns impacting quality of life.

The specialised exercises may be prescribed by your specialist as a first line early intervention treatment for scoliosis, recommended alongside bracing for scoliosis to improve outcomes and to avoid loss of correction with weaning, and for improving spinal flexibility while awaiting surgery. They are especially important in those who have finished growing, in particular to prevent or at least slow curve progression in adult years. Our team use a variety of methods including Schroth Method, SEAS and Rigo-Concept, categorized under physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE), that are designed specifically for the management of scoliosis and tailored to each patient's unique spinal curvature, the exercises target muscular symmetry and posture alignment, providing a customized approach to managing types of scoliosis.
Efficacy of Exercise Therapy
There are multiple research studies supporting their use with the following outcomes documented in research;
-
Lessen/prevent progression rate
-
Improve brace effect
-
Prevent loss of correction at brace weaning phase
-
Improved muscle endurance
-
Improved respiration
-
Improved posture
-
Improved surgical outcomes

Intensive Therapy
Our Intensive Treatment Program is an ideal solution for those residing outside the Brisbane or Gold Coast areas. Pack a week’s worth of sessions into one focused period, maximising your time without sacrificing the quality of treatment. We recommend booking 8-10 hours of immersive, one-on-one treatment with your dedicated physiotherapist, typically spread over 2-4 hours per day for optimal engagement.
To ensure we reserve enough time for you that works with our schedule, please contact us at least 6 weeks before your planned trip.
We offer in-person group classes for patients with scoliosis and kyphosis. The classes focus on individualised scoliosis specific exercises and postural corrections, while mixing in some strengthening and mobility. It is also a great way to meet others on a similar journey and build a support network.
Before joining our group classes, you will need to see one of our physiotherapists and complete your initial 1:1 sessions.
FAQ
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required for scoliosis treatment varies significantly depending on individual needs. Our primary objective is to equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform postural autocorrections tailored to your specific spinal curve. These autocorrections are crucial for integrating corrective practices into your everyday activities, especially for those with types of scoliosis. Achieving proficiency in these exercises generally requires 8-10 one-on-one sessions with your physiotherapist. However, the exact number can vary based on several factors:
-
The presence of pain or discomfort which may indicate the severity of the curvature of the spine
-
Your general body awareness and coordination, are essential for adapting to scoliosis physiotherapy
-
Ability to consistently practice prescribed home exercises
-
Your overall fitness level, which can affect your response to the therapy
Efficiency is a key goal for your physiotherapist, so the number of sessions may adjust based on how effectively you respond to the treatment and how your symptoms of scoliosis evolve with therapy.
What happens in the initial assessment?
During the initial assessment, our focus is on understanding your unique story. This comprehensive evaluation allows us to gather detailed information about your back, medical history, exercise habits, lifestyle, and any symptoms of scoliosis you might be experiencing. We aim to understand your motivations for seeking care and address all your inquiries.

We conduct a specialized physical assessment for your back, including scoliosis-specific measurements, posture photography, respiratory function tests, and assessments of your spine's flexibility and strength. This evaluation helps us in diagnosing whether you have lumbar scoliosis, thoracic scoliosis, or another form of scoliosis.

Following the assessment, we provide an in-depth explanation of what is scoliosis, the progression of scoliosis of the spine, and evidence-based recommendations for management. If necessary, we'll refer you for further tests or consultations with a specialist. We conclude by outlining a tailored therapy plan that aligns with your personal goals, ensuring a comprehensive approach to your scoliosis management.
Are the sessions covered by private health insurance?
Yes, sessions at our clinic may be covered by your private health insurance if you have Physiotherapy benefits.
Our clinic's therapists are all registered physiotherapists, allowing us to directly bill your insurance provider after your appointment using our HICAPS system. This coverage can significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses for treatments such as physiotherapy for scoliosis, enhancing accessibility to specialized care.
Are the sessions bulk billed through Medicare?
Currently, our clinic does not offer bulk billing services.
However, we do accept GP care plans, which contribute $58 towards your consultation fee. It's important to note that you cannot combine this Medicare contribution with private health insurance to cover the cost of the same consultation. This policy ensures that while we strive to make scoliosis therapy for adults accessible, we also comply with healthcare funding guidelines.
What should I wear to my appointments?
For effective assessment and treatment of scoliosis physio, it's essential that your physiotherapist has a clear view of your back, shoulders, and pelvis. Proper attire facilitates accurate assessment and guidance during exercises.

-
For males: Comfortable shorts are recommended, and you will be asked to remove your shirt for a thorough examination of your back.
-
For females: A sports bra (where applicable) and leggings or form-fitting shorts are ideal. Long hair should be tied up to ensure an unobstructed view of the back and shoulders.
This recommended attire supports the detailed assessment and treatment of conditions like mild scoliosis, ensuring that your physiotherapist can provide the most accurate and effective cues during your rehabilitation exercises.
